About Mauritz Frederick De Haas:
This marine painter from Rotterdam was born in 1832. At The Hague he studied under Louis Meyer. De Haas painted and exhibited coastal scenes of Holland, England and France. In 1858 the painter established himself in New York and became an academician in 1863 at the NAD. During the Civil War De Haas executed scenes for Admiral Farragut. Between 1867 and 1880 he exhibited at the National Academy and twice at the PAFA (1883, 1888). He exhibited at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition and contributed On the Fishing Grounds to the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1889 where he won a medal. Later his works appeared at the Art Institute of Chicago (1889-95). De Haas died in New York City in 1895. |
