About Robert Sauber:
Sauber (1868- ) was an illustrator, portrait and genre painter born in London. He exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists beginning in 1888 with A Puritan Girl. Various genre paintings followed: The Vicar’s Daughter (1890-91), A Welcome Passer-By, A Ferryman’s Daughter, L’Ecouteuse (1891-92), Paying Toll, A Connoisseur, The Parson’s Daughter, A Windy Day and Merrymaking (1892), A Pleasant Surprise and Hugh! (1893). One landscape was recorded: Water Lilies (1891-92) and a more serious picture in 1893: The Angel of Death Bearing Away the Soul. Sauber also painted Diana, a panel for a mural decoration (1892-93). At the Royal Academy Sauber exhibited five works during the same period (1888-93). He also exhibited at the Paris Salon and won a medal in 1907. Artist at Work is a more casual, small-scale production, perhaps considered to be an oil sketch. The artist is working with his back to us, painting a decorative folding screen. |
