About Marie Kelly
Born: 1916
Kelly was a highly experimental artist who worked in various media: oil, watercolor, pen and ink, embroidered panels and relief constructions. She also made her own paper. Trained at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie-Mellon University), she went on to become a significant artist in Pittsburgh. Her abstract compositions utilize line and textures in an expressive manner. Kelly exhibited "Parade" at the Carnegie Institute in 1952, a year later "Three Kings" at the Butler Institute of American Art, "The Tower" in 1957 at the Corcoran Biennial, and in 1961 she was named Artist of the Year at the Arts and Crafts Center in Pittsburgh. |
