About Ben Foster
BORN: North Anson, Maine 31 July 1852
DIED: 28 January 1926
Ben Foster was a native New Englander whose love for his region came through his paintings quite clearly. He created moody, evocative landscapes that had more in common with *tonalism than with classic impressionism. Richardson (1956, p. 368) associated him with the group including *J. Francis Murphy, *Bruce Crane, and *Henry Ward Ranger, who "worked toward an even deeper, warmer tonalism and an even more elegiac mood . . . [in] an attempt to go in the direction of deeper tone, rather than brighter hue." Foster studied with *Abbott H. Thayer and at the *Art Students League in New York. In 1886 he went to Paris to study for a year with Aimé-Nicolas Morot and Luc-Olivier Merson. Having achieved success fairly quickly after his late start, Foster began exhibiting with the *Society of American Artists in 1882 and the *National Academy of Design two years later. New York’s *Macbeth Gallery subsequently showed his work as did the *Art Institute of Chicago.
