About James Wisnowski
Chicago native James Wisnowski studied at the American Academy of Art. He has exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the American Watercolor Society, at the Union League of Chicago and at Chicago’s Palette and Chisel Arts Academy, where he teaches. He also gives classes at the North Shore Art League in Winnetka, Illinois and at the Old Town Center, also in Chicago.
Winowski has served as a juror at various artists’ competitions and exhibitions. In addition, he has conducted nineteen workshops in locations as varied as Sonoma Valley, the Grand Canyon, Tuscany, Provence, the Greek Islands and Brown County, Indiana.
Primarily a watercolor artist, Winoswki believes in a realist approach as he attempts to rediscover beauty that may be lost or forgotten in everyday subject matter: "I show the uniqueness found in simple ordinary neighborhood scenes, which are often overlooked, or capture extraordinary majesty, such as the Grand Canyon. Often I chose to simplify and emphasize the light and color in order to express my feeling. Most of my painting is en plein air."He follows the American watercolor tradition, in which broad washes define space and highly saturated color creates a solidity of form. Wisnowski takes full advantage of the luminosity that is inherent in the watercolor medium, owing to the way that light emanates from the paper itself.
