About Willem Martens
There were two late nineteenth-century Dutch painters named Willem Martens: Willem Johannes (1838-1895), born in Amsterdam and Willem or Willy Martens from The Hague (born in 1856). We believe Girl Seated by a Window must be the work of the latter, who studied in Paris under Bonnat and won an honorable mention in 1886. By 1889 he was decorated with the Légion d’Honneur and in 1900 he was a member of the Salon jury. |
