About Jess Hobby
Born in Lawrence, New York, Jess Hobby began painting at elevenn under the guidance of E. Grafton and H.B. Howley. Very early in life, he sold enought of his paintings to trek west aqnd continue studing the intricacies of painting. His work won him a job as paint boy to a stage artist from which he soon emerged a full-fledged scenic artist. Mr. Hobby has painted backgrounds for plays of such theatrical stars as Frank Bacon, Francine Larrimore, Della Fox and Lillian Russell. the huge paintings ranged from cotton filedd of Uncle Tom's Cabin to beautiful gardens for "East Lynne". As an avocation, Hobby would spend his leisure hours sketching and painting the beauty sspots of the towns he worked in. Jess Hobby was a member of the Austin, OakPark, River Forest Art League |
