About Aime-Jules Dalou

Dalou was born at Paris on 31 December 1838 and received strict academic instruction under Carpeaux and Duret. His debut at the 1867 Salon seemed to herald the beginning of a long and successful career. This would eventually come to pass, but Dalou's political involvement in the Commune of 1870-1871 caused him to flee the country, settling in England. Dalou was repatriated as a result of the general amnesty of 1879 and soon returned to Paris. Many honors and awards were were given to Dalou including the Medal of Honor from the 1889 Salon and the Grand Prix from the famous 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Always committed to providing artists with opportunities to exhibit their work, Dalou was one of the organizers of the Champ des Mars Salon when it began in 1890 under the sponsorship of the SociÄtÄ Nationale des Beaux-Arts. In recognition of his lifetime contribution to the art world, the French Government named him an Officer of the Legion of Honor.

There is another version of this plaster in the collection of the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
