About William Carlton
William Tolman Carlton (1816-1888) exhibited genre paintings at the Boston Athenaeum and at the American Art-Union (1836-55). One of his best known works is the New York State Historical Association’s Cider Mill (ca. 1855), in which a home industry has been set up inside a barn. Our Faithful Pet is much more intimate. Two children pause from peeling potatoes in front of a well to pet their little dog. The trio forms a simple pyramid in the center of the composition. It is a straight-forward view of contemporary life, probably without a hidden allegorical meaning. |
