About Frederick W. Billing
Frederick William Billing was born in Germany and came to America as a young man. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War and was wounded. Working as a stockbroker he made a fortune in New York and began studying art at the Brooklyn Academy. Leaving New York in the 1870s he settled first in Salt Lake City, Utah where he and his brother operated a smelting operation and later a silver mine. In the mid-1880s he moved again, this time to California and opened a winery with his son-in-law. Throughout this time Billing continued to paint for his own pleasure having no need to sell his art. Billing was a member of Thomas and Peter Moran's expedition to the Tetons in the summer of 1879 and they remained friends for the rest of Billing's life. |
