About Harriet Bowdoin
Harriette Bowdoin studied art under Henry Snell and *Elliott Daingerfield in New York, where she spent most of her life. Further instruction came from *Frank Brangwyn in London. Bowdoin knew the American post-impressionist *Jane Peterson, who also studied with Brangwyn. The two women artists probably traveled to Venice together in 1908. Both show a similar technique with exciting color and bold, spontaneous brushwork. Bowdoin exhibited her works at the *Art Institute of Chicago (1911-18) at the *National Academy of Design (1913-20), at the *Panama-Pacific International Exposition, and at the *Society of Independent Artists in 1917. She joined the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, the *American Watercolor Society, and the New York Society of Painters. Bowdoin died in 1947. |
