About James W. Champney
Born in Boston in 1843, Champney began as a wood engraver at the age of sixteen. After serving in the Civil War, the artist spent some time in France, Belgium and Italy to refine his skills. Further trips to Europe were made. Champney specialized in detail-oriented genre paintings and also contributed illustrations to Scribner’s series called "The Great South" and to L’Illustration. His works were exhibited at the Paris Salon (1874 and 1894), at the Brooklyn Art Association (1877-85), at the National Academy of Design (1874-1903), at the Boston Art Club (1882-1902), and at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. In 1877 Champney was appointed professor at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston has two of Champney’s works. |
