About Gunther Hartwick
Working in the style of George H. Durrie, Thomas Birch, Joseph Morviller, and other American nineteenth-century painters of winter scenes, Gunther Hartwick was active around the middle of the last century. The artist is not only capable of capturing the essence of winter but also stands out for his success in bringing out the genre. Hartwick's paintings are noted for their superior compositional quality, a contrast of textures (object properties), and a good deal of animation. His works are exceedingly rare and this painting is one of his finest. |
