New Publication: E. Boyd Smith Diary: The diary from the hand of Elmer Boyd Smith (1860-1943, The Diary of E. Boyd Smith is a direct transcription from the original hand-written diary, dated 1882-1888, of the artist and illustrator E. Boyd Smith (1860-1943), a fascinating and intriguing story of an American artist’s uphill battle against poverty, bad luck and indifference. A foreword, introduction and afterword have been added, as well as scholarly footnotes, all of which provides an art historical context to the painter’s life experiences both here and abroad. While the introduction outlines Smith's early career, the afterword briefly traces the activities of the artist following the last entry of the journal when he began to find financial success as a painter and book illustrator (in the late 1890s). Through the Great Depression and into his golden years Smith led a quiet but active life in Wilton, Connecticut, appropriately located in the “Cradle of American Impressionism.” E. Boyd Smith’s day-to-day accounting of his youthful travels, strange encounters and highlights and disappointments make for reading even more fascinating than fiction.
